Finals Day at Baldock provided a spectacle for supporters as 10 final matches were played in three sessions during the day. Some matches went the way of the form book but there were several surprises for the large crowd to enjoy.

Earlier in the week the midweek triples team continued their impressive run with two further wins, 71 shots to 60 against Henlow Park at Henlow and 74 shots to 53 against Shephalbury at Baldock.

Disappointment for Baldock in the Men's Area League final when they lost to Whitethorn in a match they dominated for much of the time. Things were progressing well until the last 5 ends when Mike Parsons rink saw their lead diminish whilst Jim McIntyre's rink were unable to reduce the deficit and the final result was a 2 shot win for Whitethorn by 44 shots to 42.
Better news for the club in the Letchworth & District semi-finals where Phil Riley and Mike Parsons overcame rivals from Roebuck to book a place in the final. There was double success for Brian Todd who reached the final of the Champion of Champions single final and also the Mixed Pairs final partnered by Anne Haywood.
During the week the midweek triples team played Riverain and came away with a convincing 84 to 51 shot win.

FULL HOUSE FOR SHIRLEY IN NORTH HERTS FINALS
Baldock's Shirley Page achieved a rarely accomplished feat when she won all four of the titles in the Ladies North Herts Finals last weekend. She was accompanied by Jan Turner in the Pairs, Anne Haywood and Rose Castle in the triples and these three plus Jan Turner won the fours.
Elsewhere on the ladies front Baldock beat Letchworth Conservatives in the North Herts League by 24 shots to 13 in a match reduced by rain to 13 ends.
Not to be outdone the men also had success beating Roebuck by 39 shots to 34 in the County Area League semi-final and will now meet Whitethorn in the final on Sunday 5th September at Royston 10.00am start.
The midweek match against Buntingford was called off due to rain but earlier in the week Baldock beat Willian by 68 shots to 59.
No game on the Saturday due to the North Herts Finals but Sunday saw the annual match against Letchworth & District delayed slightly by a flooded green. Once the weather relented Baldock went on to win the match by 122 shots to 106 with the top rink being John Tait, Graham Wells, Ivor Walker and Captain John Carter.
Baldock has representatives in the Letchworth & District semi-finals being played in bank Holiday week with Phil Riley and Mike Parsons and John Russell and Rob Dempster in the Pairs, Alan Cross in the Singles, Brian Todd in the Champion of Champions singles and Brian Todd and Anne Haywood in the Mixed Pairs.

Congratulations go to all the Baldock girls this weekend as they have all won their way through to the North Herts Ladies Finals in the Singles, Pairs, Triples & Fours, which is on Saturday 28th August at Whitethorn Bowls Clubs. Good luck to you all.
The men's section completed their league programmes with two good wins. The East Beds League team beat Fairfield to finish top of Division 6 with only one loss all season and look forward to playing in Division 5 next season. In the Men's County League Baldock had to win to ensure that they were top of Division B and did so by beating Riverain by 51 shots to 28 and move on to the semi-finals next weekend.
The midweek team also had two good wins. On Wednesday they travelled to Henlow and won by 54 shots to 49 and on Thursday away at Biggleswade by 72 shots to 52.
Only one weekend friendly this week, away to North Mymms, and another victory but a close one by 97 shots to 90. The Baldock top rink was Brian Jones, Phil Page, Dave Davies and Terry Saunders.
In the Letchworth & District competitions two more teams from Baldock have reached the semi-finals, Brian Todd in the Champion of Champions and John Russell and Rob Dempster in the Pairs. The semi-finals will be held at Baldock every evening commencing Thursday August 26 th until September 1 st . All are welcome.

Congratulations go to the Baldock Girls in the North Herts Semi-Finals this weekend at Holwell Bowls Club.
Shirley Page plays in the Singles on Saturday morning (10am) and again in the Triples with Rose Castle & Anne Hayward in the afternoon (2.00pm). On Sunday morning the girls are joined by Janet Turner and play in the Fours (10am) and in the afternoon Janet & Shirley play in the pairs. We wish them all the very best.

Following her success in the 2 wood singles Shirley Page and colleagues had less success in two other events in the National Finals losing in the quarter finals of the Triples and the second round of the Over 55 Pairs.
The men have also had a successful week with the East Beds League team beating Potton and winning promotion with one match still to play and the club winning the Letchworth & District Cairns Cup by 8 shots against Stevenage. Elsewhere in the Letchworth & District competitions Alan Cross is through to the singles semi-final, Phil Riley and Mike Parsons are in the pairs semi-final and will be joined by Graham Woods in the triples semi-final.
The midweek team had two matches and won them both beating Willian by 43 shots to 32 and Norton by 58 shots to 41.
The ladies team in the North Herts League had an exciting win against Riverain winning by 35 shots to 34 after going into the last end 4 shots down on the match.
All good things come to an end and in the only weekend friendly match Baldock were well beaten by Whitethorn by 129 shots to 89. Baldock's top rink was John Tait, Alan Russell, Colin Smith and Gill Calver.

Congratulations goes to John Carter and his Baldock mens team who beat Stevenage Town BC on Friday Night,
in the final of the Letchworth & District Cairns Cup. The final is played by having 4 rinks of triples 2 at home and 2 away.
On the night the home rinks won by 4 shots and so did the away rinks, which confirmed the overall win by 8 shots.
This is the ninth occassion at the Baldock men have won the Cairns Cup since 1984.

Congratulations goes to long time club member Shirley Page on reaching the National Final of the Two Wood Singles at Worthing.
Unfortunately she lost in the final by just one shot (13 - 14).

A bit of a mixed week for the Baldock club. On Monday evening the men's team lost to Roebuck in the Area Final of the County Inter-club Team Championship. At the same time the East Beds League team chalked up another win by 35 shots to 29 over Biggleswade St Andrews to secure their place at the top of the table with only a few matches to go.
The midweek team also had mixed results. On Tuesday they lost to Stopsley Vets by 59 shots to 67 but reversed the trend with a 97 to 47 win over Shephalbury on Thursday.
Having set the winning trend Baldock had a win over Holwell in the North Area League by 42 shots to 32 but, in doing so, lost their first rink points in the competition. The winning trend continued in the Cairns Cup semi-final where Baldock beat Whitethorn by a convincing 84 shots to 44 winning on all four rinks.
Only one game at the weekend and the trend continued with a 109 shots to 64 win against Stevenage Town. The top rink was John Tait, Brian Jones, Gwen Page and Dave Turner.
26th July
A mixed week in the County and National competitions for Baldock players.
Shirley Page won the County 2-wood singles and qualified for the National Finals at Leamington. She also qualified in the Over-55 Pairs with Anne Haywood and in the triples with Heather Stapleford and Rose Castle despite losing the Final. Less success for the Ladies in the Pairs and Fours and for the men in the Fours, all of whom lost at the semi-final stage.
The Men's East Beds League team continues to head their division after a 36 to 29 shot win over Sandy Town. In the North Area County League the men also head the table after a 78 to 30 shot win over Willian.
The weekend saw one of the closest matches this year against Henlow Park. With one end to go Baldock were trailing by 4 shots overall but Mike Wintrip's rink with Phil Page, Graham Woods and Ivor Walker picked up 5 shots to win the match by one shot, 72 shots to 71, and also the top rink prize. Alan Cross's rink also won whilst the other two rinks lost narrowly.
Sunday saw the return fixture against Hatfield and another convincing win for Baldock by 104 shots to 84. Four of the five rinks won with the top rink being John Tait, Fergus Gildea, Anne Graves and Mike Parsons. It was a good weekend for Mike as he and Muriel Saunders progressed in the National Mixed Pairs beating Yvonne Hull and Grahame Albone from Sandy Town.
5th July
The week started well for Baldock with another win in the East Beds League, this time against Fairfield by 34 shots to 30 shots to retain their position at the top of the division.
During the week the Ladies pairs of Heather Stapleford and Shirley Page and Janet Turner and Rose Castle progressed in the County Pairs with the men reaching the last 16 of the County competitions. Brian Leadley, Terry Saunders, Phil Riley and Mike Parsons progressed in the Fours while Terry Saunders and Mike Wintrip had similar success in the Pairs.
Thursday saw the club play its second match in the Men's County League and they came away with a win on both rinks against Whitethorn by 43 shots to 30. Jim McIntyre's rink won by 21 shots to 16 and Mike Parson's rink by 22 shots to 14.
Also during the last couple of weeks the Ladies team have notched up wins in the North Herts League against North Herts, Stevenage and Aston.
Friday was the 3rd round of the Inter Club Team Championship and Baldock travelled to Aston where many teams have failed. After 5 ends it looked as though this match could go the same way as Baldock were losing by 5 shots but a spirited performance through the middle of the match led to a comfortable position of 31 shots by the 15 th end and Baldock eased to a 52 shot win by 96 shots to 44. Baldock will now meet Roebuck in the Area Final.
On Saturday Baldock travelled to Sandy Town. Despite having to lend three of their best players to Sandy to make a 5 triples match Baldock won by 99 shots to 66 with the top triple being Graham Cross, Colin Smith and John Carter.
The weekend finished on a high note with another win, this time at home against Buntingford. After 10 ends Baldock trailed by 10 shots but a spirited performance in the second half led to an 8 shot win by 112 shots to 104. For the second day running Captain John Carter had the highest rink with Ann Haywood, Alan Russell and Gwen Page.
28th June
The week started with a nail-biting match against Potton in the East Beds League. Alan Cross's triple had finished winning by 7 shots. The other triple, skipped by John Carter, had one end to play and were 7 shots behind. All worked out well for Baldock as they picked up three shots to win the match by 41 shots to 38 and retain their place at the top of Division 6.
The midweek team played Sandy Town on Thursday and came away with an 18 shot win, 72 shots to 54.
Only one game for Baldock at the weekend against local rivals Fairfield. On an absolutely glorious day and with a fast running green Baldock made the most of the conditions and won on 4 of the 5 rinks by 133 shots to 81. The top rink was John Tait, Brian Griffiths, Rob Dempster and John Carter who won by a convincing 35 shots to 12.

Baldock started their County League season with a match against Norton winning on both rinks. B Leadley, J Russell, T Saunders and J McIntyre won by 26 shots to 17 and A Cross, P Page, R Dempster and M Wintrip won by 23 shots to 10.
On Friday Baldock played Three Horseshoes in the first round of the Cairns Cup. The two home triples of B Baxter, M Wintrip and J McIntyre with T Saunders, J Crosby and P Riley struggled slightly but won by 7 shots. The away triples of B Leadley, R Dempster and M Parsons with I Walker, J Carter and B Todd sealed the victory by winning by a combined 33 shots.
The weekend saw an away match on Saturday at Garston in Watford. Against a slightly weakened team Baldock were again successful winning by 80 shots to 71 with the top rink being G Cross, B Jones, C Smith and A Cross who won by 12 shots.
On Sunday Phil Riley continued his winning ways with a 20 shot win over Potton. Three of the other 4 triples also recorded victories so that the overall score was a win for Baldock by 112 shots to 68. Phil's winning team was J Tait, G Page and himself.
Earlier in the week both the East Beds League team and the Ladies North Herts League teams recorded victories over Stotfold and Knebworth respectively.

Baldock played their first round of the Inter Club Team Championship against Riverain missing several key players but still came away with a 26 shot win. The real damage was done by Mike Parsons rink who won by 24 shots against Roy Clay. A win also for Mike Wintrip's rink whilst Brian Todd drew.
Another key result came in the East Beds League where a convincing win over Biggleswade St Andrews kept the side at the top of the table with only one defeat to date.
The winning run continued over the weekend with 3 of the 4 rinks being successful at St Neots whilst the fourth rink drew. The overall result was a 33 shot win, 95 shots to 62, with the top rink being Brian Leadley, Melvin Catlin, Colin Smith and Phil Riley.
A further win on Sunday brought even more cheer to the Baldock camp. Baldock visited Whitethorn and came away with a 25 shot win by 106 shots to 91. Of the 5 rinks at Whitethorn 4 had convincing wins with the top rink being Ann Haywood, Steve Garrett, Jim McIntyre and Tony Castle.
The midweek triples team had mixed results beating St Ippolytts by 74 shots to 66 and then losing to Royston by 64 shots to 60.

Club member Mike Parsons has been selected as one of 30 player squad for Hertfordshire Bowls in the Middleton Cup for 2010.
He will play in the first match against Northamtonshire at Kingstorpe Bowls Club on Saturday 5th June.

Long time club member Shirley Page has been recalled to the England Team for the BIWBC Internationals as Team Captain
on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 22nd, 23rd and 24th June 2010, at Beach House Park, Worthing.
We all wish her the very best of luck & our congraulations at being made Team Captain.
