Baldock Town WOMEN’S TOP CLUB Runners-up 2019

Having qualified for The National Finals in the Top Club by beating teams from Hertfordshire, Essex, and Middlesex, Baldock Ladies beat a team from Sussex in the Quarter Final.

In the semi-fianl Sunday morning they defeated three-time champions Wigton BC from Cumbria 3-1, to go through to the final.

However on Sunday afternoon they lost to Devon’s Kings BC last years winners of the title, in the final 1-3.

This is was first time since 2003 Baldock ladies competted in the Top Club finals.


In the Letchworth & District Finals on Saturday Baldock men took three titles and had two Runners-up positions for 2019.

Our ladies had success at the North Herts Finals.  Devon Cooper won the singles, Rose Castle and Shirley Page won the pairs.

Club News 2019 - 10th June 2019

Devon Cooper and Shirley Page qualified for the Hertfordshire Ladies Two Wood Competition.

Baldock men beat Buntingford  3-2 in the National Top Club competition.

Elsewhere the men beat Three Horseshoes in the County league but the club lost to Whitethorn in the weekend friendly.

3rd June 2019

On Wednesday the rink skipped by Paul Andrews reached the County Semi Finals. On Friday in the County Top Ten we hosted Cheshunt and won 3-1.  In two close friendly games at the weekend we won at Harpenden by two shots and won at Royston by one shot.

27th May 2019

Baldock Town Bowls Clubs men advanced to the next in the Herts County Club Championship after winning on all three rinks against Letchworth Garden City BC men last Friday evening.

The weekends friendly matches brought a mixed bag of results we beat Ware BC on Saturday but unfortunately lost to loacal rivals Hitchin BC on Sunday.

21st May 2019

Our congratulations go to five Baldock bowlers, for being selected in this years Hertfordshire County Mens Middleton Cup Sqaud for the first match away on Saturday 1st June against Cambridgeshire at Fordham BC.

Selected for the squad for the first time is our young junior, Sam Andrews along with Robert Dempster. Paul Andrews who played in last years team and recalled members Mike Parsons and Brian Todd.

20th May 2019

A good week for Baldock bowls club which saw both Mens National Two Four teams win against Hertford BC and St Ippolyts BC.

On Friday evening the Top Ten team won against Potters Bar 6-2.

That the two weekend friendlies, we beat on Saturday, Sandy Conservatives BC 78-57.

However on Sunday they lost to Shefford BC 66-80.

12th May 2019

Our Open day on 6th May was a great success with over 50 people attending to try Bowls. Of those, 13 have asked for further coaching. In two very tight matches over the weekend, one of which we narrowly lost to Rosedale on Saturday.

However we won by 7 shots overall against Beech Hill on Sunday.

7th May 2019

Baldock only had one friendly match this weekend against Clarence Park from St.Albans. Unfortunately, with the visitors leading by ten shots, hailstones covered the green causing the match to be abandoned.

20th April 2019

The seasons opening match was the President vs Captain on Saturday, the hottest day so far the year.

It was a win for the captains team.

On Sunday the club sent a team to play Datchworth Bowls Club.

After a lovely sunny afternoon and some very good bowls, we won the first away game of the season 79-57.

BALDOCK BOWLS FESTIVAL CLUB OPEN DAY - Bank Holiday Monday on 6th May starting 1.00pm.

All are welcome to have a go at lawn bowls. There will be equipment and assitance for eveyone wanting to give bowls a try.

BALDOCK BOWLS Last Report of the Season - 20th September

On Wedensday Paul Andrews Won the Letchworth & District Champion of Champions final against Billy Chaudlery from Whitehorn BC.

On Sunday the Baldock Men played in the Hertfordshire County League Finals at Garston Bowls Club. In the semi-final they lost to Harpenden who played Buntingford BC in the final, who finally won the County League Title. In the play-off for 3rd & 4th Place, Baldock beat Garston by 1 shot on the last end.

On Saturday Malcolm Imgram became the Letchworth & District Singles Champion in an epic 3 hour final against Steve Wilson at Stevenage Town BC.

The Ladies represented Hertfordshire in the last 16 of the National Top Club at Royal Leamington Spa, unfortunately they lost to the eventual winners Devon's Kings BC.

BALDOCK BOWLS Report 13th September

On Thursday evening two Baldock triples played each other in the final of the Letchworth & District Triples at Stevenage Town Bowls Club.

The triple of Dave Davies, Brian Todd & Mike Parsons beat the triple of Matt Hayzelden, Paul Haskins & Jamie Claydon in a closley thought match.

BALDOCK BOWLS Report 10th September

On Sunday the Baldock Ladies became the 2018 East Beds League Knockout Champions.

Team: Shirley Page, Janet Turner, Debbie Claydon, Mary Gibbons (Capt.), Rose Castle, Val Bingley, Mary Ann Haskins.

Baldock’s Finals Day turned out to be a clash between the Andrews family and the Claydon family. For the Andrews family father Paul beat Jamie Claydon in the Championship singles and the Sets singles but lost to him in the 2 wood singles. Son Sam Andrews lost the singles handicap narrowly to Martin Roberts but won the Butler Cup. Meanwhile Debbie Claydon won the Ladies Handicap singles beating Caroline Cooper but lost the Championship singles to Megan MacKinnon and the 2 wood singles to Devon Cooper who made up for her mother’s earlier defeat.

In other finals Graham Woods and Dave Davies beat John Russell and Dave Hoare in the men’s Pairs and Doug Nicholls, John Carter and Dave Turner beat Alan Cook, Phil Page and Martin Roberts in the Open Triples.

All is not over for the Andrews and Claydon families as Sam and Debbie are partners in the open pairs final against Matt Haskings and Dave Davies.

Baldock men retained the Manning Cup as winners of the North Division League beating Riverain and Whitethorn to do so and will now play Harpenden in the County semi-final on September 16^th.

The Ladies have an important date the day before as they represent Hertfordshire in the last 16 of the National Top Club at Leamington Spa.

BALDOCK BOWLS Report 30th July

COUNTY CHAMPIONS !!!

The Herts County Finals produced 4 wins and 4 runners-up for the Baldock club.

Paul Andrews won the prestige Men’s Singles whist son Sam lost in the Junior Singles final to a very experienced bowler. Devon Cooper won the Ladies Junior singles against her pair’s partner but lost the 2 wood singles to a lady from Bushey. Debbie Claydon won the Ladies Unbadged singles and the Ladies won the Hertfordshire Top Club and will now play in the National Finals.

On the down side Joe Moorley lost the Men’s 2 wood singles to Phil Russell from Welwyn and the fours of Dave Davies, Phil Riley, Brian Todd and Mike Parsons were beaten by Garston.

BALDOCK BOWLS Report 23rd July

County semi-finals proved to be a mixed bag for Baldock as both the Men’s Pairs lost narrowly. However there was consolation in the singles where Paul Andrews had a good win and his son Sam also won in the semi-final of the Under 25 singles. In the men’s 2 wood singles Joe Moorley beat club mate Steve Budge. With the Fours already in the final Baldock will have good representation on County Finals day.

The ladies have also done well. Devon Cooper added to her Junior Pairs title with a win in the ladies 2 wood semi-final and will be joined on Final Day by Debbie Claydon who won her un-badged singles match.

In National competitions the Mixed Four of Debbie Claydon, Caroline Cooper, Brian Todd and Mike Parsons have qualified for the National Finals as have the Senior Ladies Pair of Shirley Page and Joan Welch from Riverain. Still in with a chance of reaching Leamington are Paul Andrews and Devon Cooper in their respective Champion of Champions singles and Men’s team in the Top Club competition where each of these needs one more win to qualify.

BALDOCK BOWLS Report 9th July

As we move towards the finals of the County competitions and the latter stages of the National competitions it is good to see that the Baldock club has representation in many events:

In the County Singles Paul Andrews is in the quarter final.

In the County Pairs the club has 3 pairs in the quarter finals – Brian Todd & Mike Parsons, Joe Moorley and Jamie Claydon and Max Mackinnon and Paul Andrews although the latter two are drawn against each other thus guaranteeing a semi-final place.

In the Under 25 singles 12 year old Sam Andrews beat last year’s National Champion of Champions to reach the final and qualify for Leamington.

In the Junior Pairs Max Mackinnon and his partner have qualified for Leamington for the second successive year.

Steve Budge and Joe Moorley have reached the semi-final of the 2 Wood singles but have to play each other.

Debbie Claydon is in the semi-final of the Ladies Unbadged singles.

Paul Andrews is in the 5^th round of the National Champion of Champions singles.

In team competitions both the Men and the ladies have reached the 5^th round of the National Top Club competitions. The men have reached the quarter final of the County Top Ten competition and are in the Divisional final of the County knockout competition.

BALDOCK BOWLS Report 10th June

Mixed emotions on Friday evening. Delight that Mike Parsons rink of Dave Davies, Phil Riley, Brian Todd and Mike had beaten a strong Royston team by 26 shots to 15 in the semi-finals and will now represent Hertfordshire in the Nation Finals at Leamington. At the same time the Baldock B team was at Garston in the National 2 Fours and, in a match which swung one way then the other, lost by one shot 40 to 41.

Elsewhere the Over 60 Mixed Four in the Alcock Trophy had a convincing win over Welwyn Garden City and will now play Rosedale.

In the National Top Club Baldock continued to progress with a win in all 5 disciplines over Stevenage Town.

BALDOCK BOWLS Report 3rd June

Success in County and National competitions is always important to a club and Baldock have made a good start this season. In the County Fours the team of Dave Davies, Phil Riley, Brian Todd and Mike Parsons have reached the semi-final stage. Another Baldock team led by Rob Dempster just failed at the same stage so there will be no all Baldock Final this year.

In the County Top Ten competition Baldock beat Harpenden and will now meet Townsend St Albans. The County League has also got under way and in their opening match Baldock beat Royston by 6 points to 0.

In National competitions the A team in the 2 Fours beat Harperbury but the B team lost at Abbotts Langley. Further success in the Over 60’s Mixed Fours where Baldock beat Potters Bar who had beaten them last year.

Weekend friendlies continue and Baldock have won more than 80% of the matches so far.

BALDOCK BOWLS Report 14th May

Open Day on bank Holiday proved a great success. The weather was superb and over 100 people of all ages turned up to try the sport. Baldock had already recruited 10 new members this season and after the Open Day another 7 wanted coaching to become members.

On the green the County triples and fours progress and the club still has several teams in each competition moving into the third round.

The ladies played Riverain I the Top Club competition and won by 3 disciplines to 1.

In the weekend fixtures Baldock travelled to Rosedale on Saturday and won on all 4 triples with a total score of 94 shots to 41. The top triple was 13 year old Hayden Chambers playing his first game for the club, Spencer Deane and Mike Parsons.

Sundays match was a home fixture against Beech Hill and again it was a clean sweep for Baldock by 82 shots to 59. The top rink was again skipped by Mike Parsons joined by Alan Cook, Mina Reid and Dave Turner. Their winning card included a “hot shot” 8 on one end, a fairly rare achievement.

BALDOCK BOWLS FESTIVAL OPEN DAY - Monday 7th May starting 1.00pm

With the bowls season under way and finer weather promised now is the time to get some exercise and try bowls as a sport.

Baldock Town Bowls Club is holding its traditional Open day on Bank Holiday Monday May 7^th from 1pm to 5pm.

We have 3 qualified coaches for those who wish to be more serious and target bowls (with prizes) and bowls hoop-la for those who just want a bit of fun.

Our members will make you welcome and there’s always refreshments and the bar will be open.

Come along and try your hand !
